About Me

Just a Small Town Girl

My friend Leigh and I
at the Dallas Holiday Parade
My name is Emelia Johnson. You can pronounce my first name like "Amelia" or "Emilia" (but I promise you that it's not "Emily"!). I'm not much of a storyteller (or even a talker in general), but since you're already here, I'll take a crack at summing up my life in a few paragraphs and even put some pictures on the sides.

Although I came to Hardin Simmons University from Breckenridge Texas, I was actually born in Salt Lake City, Utah. I moved a lot when I was younger, starting from Utah, to New Hampshire, and finally Texas.

I'm a freshman at Hardin Simmons University this year and my major is in Music Theory & Composition. I fell in love with music composing when I first started using music software when I was fifteen. In high school, my band directors Mr.Richardson and Mr.Moses encouraged me to continue pursuing composition by taking me to music theory competitions and even letting me write a song for a school concert my senior year.

I'm also involved in some extracurricular activities at HSU. As a saxophonist for the "World Famous" Cowboy Band and a clarinetist for the concert band as well as a member of the Quills & Ink Writer's Guild, you could say that I keep myself busy during the week.

When I'm not practicing my saxophone or writing music, I'm most likely watching superhero cartoons with my friends or reading a fantasy/science fiction book in the library. I'm a fan of Marvel comics, puzzle games, the German language, British crime dramas, and a good cup of tea.

When I asked my mom what kind of food I reminded her of, she said a sushi roll. They are usually tightly rolled and organized on the outside, yet they are creatively designed and hold many surprises on the inside!

So there you have it, folks! A short and sweet summary of what makes me, well, me.

Auf Wiedersehen!

  1. Beautifully written! It sounds like you are super talented. Musical skill is something that I appreciate and adore so much (although I have none). Get to great heights Emelia. Good luck with your compositions. We would love to hear more about that in these blogs throughout the semester. Love for German language- wow! I do feel the same for Korean language! Just like that... By the way, tell your mom her creativity in making the comparison is absolutely great. Wonderful way to put it!!

    1. Thank you for the kind words and encouragement, Dr.Pris! I'm glad that you enjoy a foreign language as well. Korean is lovely to listen to, although I can't even begin to imagine the challenge it would be to learn it. I will definitely tell my mom about your compliment for her comparison.

  2. Wow this was awesome! Have you written blogs before? It was nice reading about you and what you like to do. It's cool how these blogs kind of help us get to know each other. I personally did not want to put any pictures up, but it's nice to see you incorporated pictures of your life into your blog. Great job!

    1. This is my very first blog! It took me a few days to plan it all out, but I'm glad that I took the time to do so. That's the cool thing about blogs, though. Everyone writes and designs their own differently! Thank you for the kind words.

  4. Emelia this was a great read and it's very impressive with how much you're already so involved with the university. To me, it is also very cool how you have lived in Utah and New Hampshire before, I've always wanted to travel to Utah. You definitely have an interesting work week that keeps you very busy to say the least. Have a great semester it's nice to meet you.

    1. I hope you get to go to Utah someday. It is so geographically diverse that you can go from skiing in the North to wandering the red rock canyons in the South in a few days time. It's nice to meet you too, River. :)

  5. Great first post! You write like a natural blogger; I enjoyed reading and learning a bit about you. I used to want to be in the Cowboy Band when I was younger (I played the clarinet) so I think it's really cool that you're a part of it and you are enjoying it! Nice to (virtually) meet you, Emelia!

    1. Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad that I was able to get the hang of blogging because it took me a few days to perfect my first post. That's so cool that you used to play the clarinet! It was the first instrument that I was able to play well. Nice to meet you too, Ashlyn!

  6. I love that you are in the Cowboy band, I wanted to join but I had always felt that it would be too much on my plate. I have never read any of the Marvel comic books but I do love the movies. You are very fluent writer/blogger, your organization is very nice and easy to understand, I admire that. Keep doing what you love and do not let anyone tell you differently! Very nice to meet you virtually, Emilia.

    1. Being in the Cowboy Band is definitely a big time commitment, but it has tremendously changed my life for the better. It's nothing like a traditional marching band, which is why I enjoy it so much! We'd love to have you if you decide to join later on!

I love the Marvel movies too! Who are your favorite Marvel characters? I personally like Captain America and Iron Man the best from the movies. I'm so excited for the Black Panther movie!

Thank you for all of your encouraging words. It's a pleasure to meet you too! :D

  8. It is pretty awesome having a fellow composer and fellow composition and theory major in class! Of course I am a fan of how much music is important to you! It's so cool that you've been to all those competitions and were able to have one of your pieces performed. I would love to hear some of your stuff sometime!

    1. I'm glad that we got to share a class together this semester (we'll probably have plenty more in the future semesters as well). I'd love to exchange Sound Clouds sometime (or if you have some other place that you've posted your music, that's cool too!).
